Ever wonder what the biggest wave ever surfed was?
Only a few months ago, the record (previously held at 78 feet by pro surfer Garret McNamara) was broken by the Brazilian big wave surfer Rodrigo Koxa at Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal on November 8, 2017. Praia do Norte is famous for these monster waves, and Rodrigo managed to stay on his feet after being towed into this 80 foot behemoth by a waverunner. What is that, like 14x overhead?
Koxa almost died at Praia do Norte in 2014, and it was a long road to psychological recovery to get back in the water with these big waves. “I got a present from God,” Koxa said of the 80-footer in a later interview. “It was the best present I ever had.”
Koxa holds the title for now, but many have claimed to have surfed bigger waves which are unconfirmed by the World Surf League and the Guinness Book of World Records. It’s only a matter of time before someone surfs a bigger one! Stay tuned here at Heli Mag!
