Central Hokkaido

Central Hokkaido is ideal for storm chasing, where most operations will shuttle you to best spots/zones. The resorts are all driving distance, making for easy access or resort backup if you’re touring. The region is not westernized, so it provides a more authentic experience. Old school ski resorts and a bit off the beaten track, Central Hokkaido is ideal for those focused on the ski experience and wanting to avoid the crowds.

Nagano and Hakuba Valley

With easy access from Tokyo, and some of the most impressive mountains in all of Japan with the Japanese Alps, it’s no wonder this region is popular for visitors to the island. But if you want to escape the crowds, going with a guided outfit in the region is the perfect way to get the insider track on skiing in the region.

gage, you’ll likely be able to piece together a full kit whereever you are, especially at any heliski lodge, but the boots are the crux.

Southern Hokkaido

With some of the highest snowfall totals in all of Japan at 600” annually, Southern Hokkaido is truly the home of Japow. Niseko, Rusutsu and Kiroro are larger resorts, known for their sidecountry access. You’ll enjoy the benefits of being close to Sapporo, so you can check out the city and add on some cultural activities. English is widely spoken, and the area is a bit more westernized. There are plenty of onsens, whiskey tasting, breweries and plenty more to explore when you’re off your skis or board.

Our Select Southern Hokkaido Tours:

Tohoku

Located on the northern stretch of the main island, Honshu, the Tohoku region is easily accessed via bullet train from Tokyo. Still somewhat undiscovered, this region has consistent and reliable snowfall. It also has no lift lines and onsens galore. Geto Kogen, a resort in the area, competes with Niseko and Hakuba each year for the snowfall record. Zao Onsen resort is famous for it’s snow monsters, the trees coated in a thick layer of snow. Trains run to Marioka station, the central hub, from which most adventures in the regions jump off, and make it perfect for storm chasing.
